Recovery

Addiction is an incurable disease. The list of addictions includes alcohol, drugs, sex (including pornography), gambling, eating and others. Recovery from any addiction is a life-long process initially requiring surrender of self will (control) and acceptance of God’s will for one’s life. This process may involve residential inpatient treatment, outpatient counselling, medication assisted treatment, 12 step programs or a combination of some or all of these. The objective being to become “clean and sober” and to have a recovery program that works one day at a time.
Addiction affects the family and friends of the addict. Thus, they need a similar model for recovery. This is a life-long process initially requiring surrender of self will (control) and accepting God’s will for one’s life. This process may involve counselling, participation in the Alanon 12 step program or both. The objective being to release the addict to the care of God and to take care oneself and have a recovery program that works one day at a time.
Mission
To support recovery from addiction such that persons wanting help, whether addict, family, or friend, can get the help they need without fear of rejection or shame. (Reference Mark 12:31)
Goals
- Post online recovery support and education opportunities in the BStA newsletter.
- Serve as a conduit for recovery information to the BStA brothers, chapters, Provincial Presidents, and Diocesan Coordinators.
- Prepare recovery presentations for chapter meetings, workshops at conventions, YouTube, and podcasts.
Prayer
O blessed Lord, you ministered to all who came to you: Look with compassion upon all who through addiction have lost their health and freedom. Restore to them the assurance of your unfailing mercy; remove from them the fears that beset them, strengthen them in the work of their recovery; and to those who care for them, give patient understanding and persevering love. Amen. (BCP pg. 831)
